It would be intriguing to see if any particular countries or cultures are significantly more successful at drug rehabilitation than others.  Because each culture is different and has different ways and viewpoints regarding addiction and recovery, it’s hard to believe that every country is as successful as the others.

If there are certain countries that perform better than their peers at drug or alcohol rehab, than why haven’t these practices been thoroughly examined, tested, and been used as a best practice case study across all other countries.  There have likely been studies of this type done, although they are very difficult to find if they exist.

Some countries or cultures don’t believe substance abuse is a mental issue, while others believe it is.  This fact alone can lead to huge variances in how addiction is treated, if it’s treated at all.  The same individual could likely receive two completely different diagnoses depending on which country he or she is diagnosed in.  It’s hard to believe that both treatment programs would be equally as effective.  Can anybody find any studies or data that compares drug and alcohol treatment types across countries and cultures?  If so please respond in the comments.

Food in New York City

Feb-15-2009 By Christine

New York has established itself as one of the top food cities in the world. The sheer volume of food available is staggering: Ther are over 25,000 New York restaurants to choose from and an additional 4000 licensed street vendors selling food on the streets and in the parks. Luckily, the variety of cuisines and the quality of the food offered is very high. New Yorkers are a demanding audience and chefs and other food purveyors know they have to live up to the city’s reputation.

Street food is one of New York’s guilty pleasures. Vendors are known for their hot dogs and pretzels, New York-style of course. There are also stands, carts, and stalls throughout the city offering pizza (again, New York style), coffee, bagels, dosas, falafel, and even ice cream.

In thinking about New York food, there are obviously certain foods for which the city is known. Famous for its own “New York style” for pizza, bagels, cheesecake, hot dogs, and deli sandwiches, the city is also the birthplace of dishes such as the Waldorf Salad, Eggs Benedict, Lobster Newburg, Chicken ala King, Steak Diance, and pasta primavera — amongst many others.

For those who like to experiment with different cuisines, New York is a one-stop shop. Some neighborhoods are known for specific immigrant populations and the cuisines that came with them. Other ethnic cuisines are available throughout the city. A short list of wonderful ethnic foods found in New York would include Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Russian, German, French, Italian, Thai, Central American, South American, Carribean, and African. Of course, many of these regions are represented by specific national or even regional cuisines.

New York is also known as a media town, so its no suprise that many of the top food magazines are published here and that the headquarters of the Food Network cable channel are located in Chelsea Market. With so much attention focused on the New York food scene it attracts top chefs from all over the world. Each wants to prove themselves to the discerning New York palates and more successful chefs will have not just a flagship restaurant, but several establishments offering different variations of their primary cuisine.

With so many chefs in town, its not surprise that New York is on the cutting edge of modern cuisines. Chefs here are creating new and exciting dishes all the time. They work on the fusion of different flavors and techniques and experiment with molecular gastronomy. The result is that the city remains the place to find what’s new in food as well a great place to enjoy the traditional – for almost any food.

Hong Kong’s Many Festivals

Feb-1-2009 By Christine

Hong Kong manages to meld Eastern traditions with customs and aesthetics from the West into an incredibly intoxicating experience for the modern visitor. The modern skyscrapers, financial centers, and shopping districts are but one side of this Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic. Colonial architecture, traditional temples, mosques, and churches, and the spirit and energy of music, arts, and culture of Hong Kong’s people are another part of the equation.

This mixture of East/West and Old/New is evidenced in the variety of festivals and celebrations held in Hong Kong every year. Visitors planning to attend any of these events will find a variety of accomodations available in the region, including some fine 5 star Hong Kong hotels.

While there are some secular events, most are related to religion and cultures of the population. Arts festivals include the Man Literary Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, and the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

While many people may consider the Chinese New Year the best time to party in Hong Kong, its important to note that many restaurants and shops are closed for this event. There are some establishments that remain open, though perhaps with shortened hours. Planning ahead will make it easier to enjoy this festive season.

Some of the other exciting Chinese festivals celebrated in Hong Kong include the Spring Lantern Festival, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, the Ching Ming Festival, and the Tuen Ng Festival. The Hungry Ghost Festival isn’t a public festival, but does provide the opportunity to attend special performances of traditional arts, such as Chinese opera.

Western celebrations that have been adopted by Hong Kong include Halloween and Christmas. However, it is New Year’s Eve that has really been embraced by the people. Hundreds of thousands of people celebrate in the streets and gather to watch fireworks in the Harbour.
