India Gate

Apr-27-2009 By Christine

India Gate is perhaps one of the most impressive structures built in the capital of India. India Gate situated in the heart of Delhi not far from five star hotels in Delhi, is one of the most easily accessible tourist destinations in the state. Because of the centralized location, it’s hard to miss especially if you’re traveling across town.

Located at the eastern end of Rajpath, stands the splendid stone arch of triumph, which soars 160 feet high with an arch of 138 feet. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931, it was originally called the All India War Memorial. This historic monument built from sandstone, was erected as a memorial to honor the 90,000 Indian soldiers who were killed in the service of World War 1. In the arch of this enormous structure, the Eternal Flame is housed. This flame is to remind us of Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the Pakistan war in 1971. On the walls of the structure are inscribed the names of all the soldiers. Surrounding the India Gate is a vast stretch of rolling green lawn which can be used day or night for picnicking or gatherings. Located nearby is the once controversial “canopy monument. The canopy was also designed and built by Lutyens. All who visit this historic site will experience a heightened spirit of nationalism which is kept alive by these symbolic gestures.

The most advantageous time of day to visit this site is just before the sun sets. At this time of day families with children and young couples stroll the mall. The environment becomes festive and all who are visiting enjoy the spectacular surroundings. After dark, the India Gate, illuminated with bright lighting while the cascading water effects are saturated with colored lights. People of Delhi and visitors alike revitalize themselves by visiting this national treasure.

The history and relevance of Sanskrit drama to the contemporary Indian stage is an essential part of the training at The Kala Academy. Kalidasa is widely considered to be the greatest of the Sanskrit writers and he is the most studied. He is placed in the same category of Eastern drama as Shakespeare is to the West. His work deals primarily with mythological themes, and he is known for his simple use of language and extensive use of simile. Three of his most known works are The Recognition of Shakuntala, Malavika and Agnimitra, and Vikrama and Urvashi. He is so well known that centuries later the German poet Goethe mentions him in a poem. Bhasa is another well-known and respected Sanskrit dramatist, though his works are only attributed to him by later historians. 13 manuscripts have been attributed to him, and others are suggested as possibilities, though they haven’t been confirmed. Karnabhara is one of his most critically acclaimed plays and is often the subject of experimentation in schools such as Kala Academy.

Finding Employment in Dubai

Apr-26-2009 By Christine

Many aspects of the culture of Dubai, India can affect the ability for a foreigner to fine employment. And most of the factors that affect employment in other countries, the effects these factors have in this city are more significant. Companies in Dubai look for experience in a certain field, rather the the number of college degrees. In countries such as the United States, a college degree is everything. Now so more than ever as the economy has people competing for jobs waiting tables, wherein the applicants were at one time bankers or real estate brokers. In the luxury hotels, Dubai UAE what matters is experience in restaurants, not the Ivy League school degree in marketing. This goes for all jobs in every industry and in every profession. Schooling is important, however someone fresh from the university will just not possess the practical and real-life experience Dubai companies are looking for in their employees. Employers in Dubai looking for those with specialized skill, will be a bit more lenient on those who apply, they are willing to train. But in this country, education? who cares, can one do the job and do it well, is the belief and the attitude.

Being able to communicate in the English language is beneficial. Those who are native speakers, tend to have a bit more of an advantage. Some of this has to do with the generalizations of those that are from English speaking countries, that the economies of such countries are usually more advanced, with better education systems and better training programs. On a literal level, most of international business is conducted with English as being the universal language. And physical appearance, in Dubai, flashy style and leaving a good impression go hand in hand. Dubai has no tolerance for those who are plain. It is just the way it is. Appearance means a lot in this city. It is also about being approachable, being outgoing. The top companies in this city in India, expect those working for them to be comfortable entertaining clients, to possess the ability to charm and to have a good time. It is about the job in Dubai, not about the credentials. Anyone can put numbers into statistical equations, what this city wants, are those who can actually understand it, those with not just knowledge but those with wisdom.

Kuo Pao Kun

Apr-20-2009 By Christine

Kuo Pao Kun was a prominent playwright and director in Singapore. He was also well known for his arts activism and seminars and workshops. His legacy includes many dramas as well as his contributions to the arts scene and education. His dramatic style was highly politicized and progress oriented. His work has been staged internationally and is recognized for its use multicultural themes and metaphors.

Kuo Pao Kun was born in the Hebei Province in 1939. His mother took him to Beijing until when he was ten his father sent for him and he moved to Singapore. At the age of 14 he joined Rediffusion’s Mandarin Radio play and quickly fell in love with performing and writing Chinese Xiangsheng and radio dramas. After his graduation from high school he gained employment with Radio Australia in Melbourne, partly because of his broadcasting experience and partly due to his being bilingual. He worked there for over three years before attending the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. His studies at the NIDA gave him a solid foundation in Western theatre traditions including classical Western theatre such as the Greeks. He met dancer choreographer Goh Lay Kuan while at school and they became engaged. They moved back to Singapore in 1965 and together they founded the Practice Performing Arts School, which included lessons in drama and dance. The school was established near some of the best Singapore hotels, where out of town visitors would notice take note of the new program.

Kun’s students joined him in 1972 in an effort that became known as the “Go into Life Campaign.” The intention behind this was to demonstrate that art was a product of the life lived and they went into the laboring work forces of Singapore for experience. They believed that an artist could not write well on a subject they were not personally experienced in. This movement produced a number of original works based on the real life stories of working people. The Fishing Village is one of the better-known examples of this.

The Traditions of the Algonquin Hotel

Apr-18-2009 By Christine

One hotel in New York city has many stories. “If walls could talk”, and in this case they kind of did. The Round Table group of writers started having their daily meetings at the hotel in the summer of 1919. The famous group of writers included of Dorothy Parker, James Benchley and Alexander Woollcott to name just a few. Some of which became known as the Vicious Circle. The meetings were held in this Manhattan accommodation every day, for just close to ten years. Actors, journalists and publicists were all part of the round table meeting. This became not only a tradition for the group, but for those not invited to the table, who would sit at a table as close as they could get, just to over-hear the conversations and the banter of the witty and often sardonic comments. Hence the name of the ‘Vicious Circle’.

One other tradition of the hotel began in 1930. The owner at that time was Frank Case. One night he let in a stray cat. Apparently, on the suggestion of John Barrymore, the famous actor was staying at the hotel at the time, he named the cat Hamlet. Case decided that the hotel would from then on, have a cat living in the hotel, with the complete freedom to wander anywhere throughout. And the name stuck, for over the years although there were many different cats, the males were always named Hamlet, and the females would always be named Matilda. The current cat in residence today, is a Matilda. Matilda is often seen in the lobby of the hotel in her own private lounge chair, and she even receives emails, that are answered by the hotel manager.

Lunch for struggling writers is also a tradition started by Case, for back in the Round Table days, he would send over food to the starving artists. He would offer rooms to the writers in exchange for a signed copy of their books. No longer can one exchange a night’s stay at the hotel for their work, but the offer still stands for lunch. Although the lunches are no longer free, they are offered at discount prices to those making their way in today’s literary world of Manhattan.

Singapore is a member of ASEAN, Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Singapore and China are allies and considered to be of the most powerful countries in the region. China has recently joined with ASEAN, and the incredible relationship between the two countries is serving to further create a bridge and a greater engagement on China’s Cooperation with the agreements of the various treaties and agreements put forth by the Association. The Regional Forum is dedicated to promoting and ensuring security and peace through all of Southeast Asia. And in such situations as the combined efforts necessary during times of disaster, situations regarding terrorism and national security, and ensures cooperation in issues regarding safe nuclear practices and the laws and regulations off all the countries involved. Singapore and China will join together this summer at a conference in Beijing to discuss all the issues previously stated. Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong expresses his joy over the cooperation and the involvement of China in the ARF. Many of the tenets of the organizations and the treaties have served to hopefully guarantee the resolution of disputes or in the different philosophies that occur from time to time between the regions and all of the countries with the South China Sea, with judicial and peaceful solutions.

And the progressive building of these relationships also serves to bring aid and alliance during times of economic crisis, ensuring that the luxury hotels of Singapore, the convention halls and the shops, and markets in all of Southeast Asia will continue to thrive. Each country supports the other. The economic success of each region is the main concern for the the Free Trade Agreements that have been initiated and practiced since 1992. Lee states that Singapore’s role for the region, being a small country among those with more geographical and financial resources, has been to be a broker, an honest and respected go between, an ambassador for all the countries involved. The creation of alliances began with Lee’s father. Previously the Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong has worked on creating alliances with the other countries during his term and continues to mentor his son on the importance of maintaining existing alliances and creating new alliances internationally. Which is a good philosophy during peaceful and economically profitable times in terms of tourism and trade, but during times when assistance is required.

Dog Adoption in Singapore

Apr-6-2009 By Christine

The local shelter in Singapore, aptly called Action for Singapore Dogs is a non-profit agency. The main concern is that the future of the animals they adopt out remains their utmost priority. It is the welfare of the animals and not monetary gain nor profit which drives them in their mission. Character traits and personalities of each specific animal is openly discussed, all the good, and all the bad. They state that they are not concerned with only adopting out the animals, but ensuring that the owners know what they are getting and are able and willing to deal with it for the rest of the dog’s life. It serves no purpose to place a dog without the knowledge of what either the people, or the dog are in store for, this is a philosophy in which they adhere to strictly and with pride. All that stated, they will not just wash their hands of the ‘deal’ should something go wrong, as in the case with many high-end breeders or pet stores. Employees of the agency keep in contact throughout the years with the owners of the dogs they release, and offer help at any stage of the training process and development of the pet/owner bond. They do emphasize however, that just trying dogs on for size is not what they are about and not something that they support. That even though a new dog may be problematic at first, there are ways to deal with and correct behavioral problems, creating a more harmonious life for all those involved.

While many are strays picked up on the streets in the residential neighborhoods, business districts and along the roads of Singapore luxury hotels, the mixed breeds often times make the best companions. Much more healthy and hearty than their pure breed counterparts, the dogs are very low maintenance and are very acclimated to the heat and the humidity of the Singapore environment. Common health issues associated with the pure bred, such as skin ailments or genetic defects are often by-passed in the mixes, they are just simple tougher than the pedigrees. Those pedigrees can cost would-be dog owners anywhere from $500 to $2,000 dollars. And any costs related to the health of the animals is left up to the owner. While there is a minimal adoption fee at the shelter, many more benefits, including visits to the vet, are included. All the dogs adopted out by the shelter are rescued animals, either beaten or abandoned. And while they are still, “just” dogs, their survival through suffering and the hardship they have endured, they remember and will forever be grateful and loyal companions. For whether an abandoned creature is rescued on the streets of New York, Detroit, Paris or downtown Singapore, they will know that they have been given a second chance.
