India Gate
India Gate is perhaps one of the most impressive structures built in the capital of India. India Gate situated in the heart of Delhi not far from five star hotels in Delhi, is one of the most easily accessible tourist destinations in the state. Because of the centralized location, it’s hard to miss especially if you’re traveling across town.
Located at the eastern end of Rajpath, stands the splendid stone arch of triumph, which soars 160 feet high with an arch of 138 feet. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931, it was originally called the All India War Memorial. This historic monument built from sandstone, was erected as a memorial to honor the 90,000 Indian soldiers who were killed in the service of World War 1. In the arch of this enormous structure, the Eternal Flame is housed. This flame is to remind us of Indian soldiers who gave their lives in the Pakistan war in 1971. On the walls of the structure are inscribed the names of all the soldiers. Surrounding the India Gate is a vast stretch of rolling green lawn which can be used day or night for picnicking or gatherings. Located nearby is the once controversial “canopy monument. The canopy was also designed and built by Lutyens. All who visit this historic site will experience a heightened spirit of nationalism which is kept alive by these symbolic gestures.
The most advantageous time of day to visit this site is just before the sun sets. At this time of day families with children and young couples stroll the mall. The environment becomes festive and all who are visiting enjoy the spectacular surroundings. After dark, the India Gate, illuminated with bright lighting while the cascading water effects are saturated with colored lights. People of Delhi and visitors alike revitalize themselves by visiting this national treasure.
