The history and relevance of Sanskrit drama to the contemporary Indian stage is an essential part of the training at The Kala Academy. Kalidasa is widely considered to be the greatest of the Sanskrit writers and he is the most studied. He is placed in the same category of Eastern drama as Shakespeare is to the West. His work deals primarily with mythological themes, and he is known for his simple use of language and extensive use of simile. Three of his most known works are The Recognition of Shakuntala, Malavika and Agnimitra, and Vikrama and Urvashi. He is so well known that centuries later the German poet Goethe mentions him in a poem. Bhasa is another well-known and respected Sanskrit dramatist, though his works are only attributed to him by later historians. 13 manuscripts have been attributed to him, and others are suggested as possibilities, though they haven’t been confirmed. Karnabhara is one of his most critically acclaimed plays and is often the subject of experimentation in schools such as Kala Academy.
