Charcoal vs. gas grills

Jun-26-2009 By Christine

If you are in the market for a grill there is one major decision you need to make before you even step out of your house to buy one. Do you want charcoal or gas?

Charcoal grills in mass production were started by the Weber company and were really what popularized American grilling. But really the debate is a matter of preference. Some folks think that charcoal is the only way to grill because of the taste it gives the grilled meat. While others prefer a gas grill because of how convenient it is.

Although charcoal grills may give grilled meat the best flavor it is also the most difficult way to grill. Grilling with Kingsford coals gives meat the smoky taste that most people associate with grilling.

With gas grills, just flipping a switch to grill is appealing. There is no kind of prep work with a gas grill and you can cook things easily and quickly. And when you run out of propane you can just go fill it up at the local gas station. However, these types of grills don’t really add much flavor or taste to the food.

As far as taste goes, it really does depend on the person. Although most people can taste the difference between a steak cooked on a gas grill or one cooked over coals.

Also you have to consider how much space you have in your backyard for a grill. These days people can have massive outdoor kitchens in their backyard. Check out the website of Steven Barbarich, chooseoutdoorkitchens.com to find some at great prices. Smaller areas do well with electric grills because they are much safer and do not produce flare-ups. A charcoal grill normally requires more room.

When it comes to cost, it’s a toss up. Charcoal is the more expensive fuel compared to electric or gas grills.

Major League baseball (MLB) implemented a drug testing program to rid the game of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs that have forced hardball fans to question the outstanding pitching and hitting accomplishments of such modern legends such Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Mark McGwire, among others.

This year, America’s pastime has already dealt with positive drug testing results from two of its biggest current stars. Before the 2009 season even began, Sports Illustrated magazine broke the news of New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez’s failed drug test during MLB’s 2003 survey testing for steroids. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez tested positive for a banned substance in spring training and was recently suspended for 50 games in accordance with MLB regulations, forfeiting $7.7 million in salary from his two-year, $45-million contract.

NASCAR is also taking a stronger stance on substance and drug abuse to start the ‘09 season. NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield failed a random drug test and was suspended indefinitely, becoming the first driver to violate NASCAR’s tough new drug policy that went into effect this season. In a statement, Mayfield said that the combination of a prescribed medicine and an over the counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test for a banned substance. He and his doctor are working with NASCAR and the company running NASCAR’s drug testing program to resolve the matter.

And NASCAR’s drug testing policy extends beyond the race track to the pit stop. Days after the Daytona 500, one of Mayfield’s pit crew members became the first person punished under NASCAR’s new drug testing policy for a failed drug test. More recently, two more pit crew members from other racing teams were suspended indefinitely for failed drug tests.

Among the substances NASCAR crews must be tested for are:

*
Seven different amphetamines, including methamphetamine and PMA, a synthetic psycho stimulant and hallucinogen.
*
Three drugs classified under ephedrine.
*
13 different narcotics, including codeine and morphine.
*
Ten different benzodiazepines and barbiturates.
*
Marijuana, cocaine, zolpidem, nitrites, chromates and drugs that can increase specific gravity.

Many pro athletes enter drug rehab and alcohol rehab for problems with substance abuse and pay a high price for not following their leagues guidelines. Not just in the league but these people could need some real drug rehab programs.

John Goodman Performs in New York

Jun-16-2009 By Christine

John Goodman is currently starring in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. He is an American actor, most known for his movie roles, though he is also an accomplished stage actor. Many film actors have their roots and training in theatre, though they have migrated to film because there is usually better pay. For these actors, the theatre seems to remain in their blood and after achieving commercial and financial success in film, they often return to their true passion, which is the stage. Tourists often visit New York to see a Broadway or Off-Broadway production and major film stars add to the excitement of any show. Guests at the many 4 star hotels New York are often there specifically to catch the latest hit Broadway play.

Goodman was born on June 20, 1952 in Affton, Missouri. He received a full scholarship for football to what is now Missouri State University though while he was there he received a major injury that quickly ended his football career. After this happened he decided to follow his other passion, acting. He left Missouri in 1975 and headed for New York. He tried to get work in the theatre and took a job as a bartender and food server to pay his bills. He performed in dinner theatres Off-Broadway and was able to find nominal work in commercials and voice-overs. In the 1980s he started to get work in films, and this launched an entire new direction in his career.

Goodman is most known for his role on the television series Roseanne, where he played her husband Dan Conner. The program aired for nine years from 1988 to 1997. Prior to this he had appeared in films such as Eddie Macon’s Run, the Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou and Raising Arizona. He has also been a regular guest on nighttime talk shows and has been featured as a guest performer in many television series. He had a recurring role as the fictional Speaker of the House in the popular series West Wing. In 2007 he played an ornery judge in the series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip for which he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor.

Falling in Love Goa style

Jun-11-2009 By Christine

Though it is undoubtedly one of India’s most popular tourist destinations, it might surprise you to know that Goa most definitely is not being invaded with huge real estate developers. Naturally, there are some large Goa Spa Resorts around, both in the north and south parts of Goa, but if you are really insistent, you could potentially stay in Goa and never leave one of those places. But, as far as I can tell, Goa is not in the process of becoming like another Dominican Republic or something coping a Jamaica tourist trap with all the super mega resorts dominating and eclipsing the local population and cultures.

The best beaches are still open to the public, crowded yes, but many of the public beaches seem perfectly tranquil. A mix of foreign and Indian tourists enjoying the golden sun baked sands. It’s also worth pointing out that Goa has a substantial economic, industrial and cultural life that is not concerned with tourism. An example: Goa is apparently popular with the pharmaceutical companies, because the low levels of pollution in the air and water make it easier for these factories to reach very high levels of purity in manufacturing medicine. The local Cipla plant makes the Indian generic version of AIDS cocktail drugs that are sent to sub-Saharan Africa and delivered to patients at a a minimal cost.

Goa’s resistance to outside money and the large tourism projects is not because they don’t want it, but because Goans have a healthy voice about the direction of where Goa is going. This Goan voice has curtailed many developers encroachments on their tranquil lifestyle. As a result, you will only see some tourist developments; measured and limited. The movement to protect Goa’s distinctively laid-back, but fluid cultural heritage does not come without some issues and challenges. But, issues and challenges, I noticed that are well worth the fight

Franciscan From Mallorca

Jun-9-2009 By Christine

Fray Junipero Serra was an 18th century Spanish Franciscan Friar. He was born in November 1713 on the Balearic Island of Mallorca. He is known in the United States for founding the mission chain in Alta, California. He is one of a number of interesting personalities that are from or have lived on this island. Mallorca is extremely attractive to people looking to relocate, it is also loved by its residents, and of course is amazingly popular with tourists. Mallorca has had a drastic increase in its tourism rate since the 1950s and the many 5 star Mallorca hotels are ready to accommodate the millions of people that visit the island every year.

In September of 1730 Serra joined the Orders of Friars Minor. He was an incredibly gifted scholar and due to his proficiency in his studies he was selected as a lecturer prior to his official ordination into the priesthood. He obtained his doctorate in theology from the Lullian University in Mallorca’s capital city Palma. After receiving his degree he joined the missionary school, College of San Fernando de Mexico, in 1749. Also in 1749 he journey to North America and spent time in Mexico City. One day he was riding a mule from Vera Cruz to the capital and had an accident. He injured his leg and never fully recovered. Though this caused him pain throughout his life, he would frequently travel by foot.

Serra was appointed the superior of a group of 15 Franciscans from Baja, California in 1768. Early the following year he accompanied Governor Gaspar de Portola on his expedition trip to Alta, California. While he was on his way there he established the only Franciscan mission in Baja California. He reached San Diego with the rest of his party and founded the Mission San Diego de Alcala. He later traveled up the coast to what is now known as Monterey and established Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo and in 1771 he relocated it to Carmel. It is now known as Mission Carmel.

Teenage Entrepreneurs Johannesburg

Jun-8-2009 By Christine

I was abroad in Johannesburg investigating a new company which will help the company I work for gain more customers when I notice some young teenagers set up a table outside several luxury hotels Johannesburg offers to the business travelers. These teenagers placed on the simple six foot table several eye pleasing colorful jars filled with various toiletry items necessary for that weary business traveler who might have either forgotten to pack some lotion or used up what they did pack.

Teenage entrepreneurs. I was amazed at their ingenuity and dedication. It must be profitable for them because I watched them, while I waited for a service car to pick me up, set up every morning and with an alacrity of enthusiasm. While riding in the service car being taken to the company I was here to do business with, I couldn’t help think back and wonder why I didn’t take on the challenge to be different than the others, to be a teenage entrepreneur. Instead I took the usual route and worked at a fast-food restaurant saving up my money; playing it safe as it were, instead of having the courage to make an attempt to bring those dozens of ideas and dreams I had has a young teenager into fruition.

Even though now, I don’t have my own business, back then I know if I started my own small business, like those teenagers I watched selling jarred toiletries, I possible would’ve made more money than the minimum wage I was earning flipping burgers and probably made a career early on in my life and a career I enjoyed. I wouldn’t have had to rely on my parent’s allowance and achieved an unimaginable independence that would be attractive to the opposite sex.

The experience of having made my own money and building up my own business would’ve also built up my confidence about who I am and built up the confidence to achieve my many other dreams. Well, currently, as I arrive in front of the company I’m here to do business with, I can, at least, have admiration for those teenagers that did have the gumption and confidence to make their dreams come true.

The Burj Dubai Skyscraper

Jun-8-2009 By Christine

The Burj Dubai is already considered to be the tallest man made structure in the world, though at present it is incomplete. Construction on this massive building began in 2004 and projections anticipate that it will be completed by September of this year and ready for occupancy. There are many natural wonders that attract tourists to Dubai. And also the cultural heritage landmarks and architectural designs provide many points of interest. Dubai is a thriving contemporary metropolis and its arts scene has put it in the international light. Major buildings and landmarks such as the Burj Dubai entice the many tourists who stay in a 4 star hotel Dubai .

Adrian Smith is the architect who designed the Burj Dubai, which is located in the financial center known as the Downtown Burj Dubai. SOM is the Chicago based engineering and architecture firm that is in charge of this massive project, which required a production budget of 4.1 billion dollars. Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed the building and are also responsible for many other skyscrapers, including the Sears Tower in Chicago and Building One of the New York World Trade Center. While the Burj Dubai resembles the bundled tube style of the Sears Tower, it is actually not a tube structure. The building is also reminiscent of the The Illinois, a mile high skyscraper designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The design for this building is taken from various aspects of Islamic architecture. It consists of a central core that is surrounded by three other elements. The exterior of the building is engineered to withstand the extreme temperatures of Dubai. It consists of aluminum, textured stainless steal spandrel panels and reflective glazing. The interior of the building is designed by Giorgio Armani . An Armani Hotel will cover the lower 37 floors. Private apartments will occupy the floors in the 45 through 108 range. The remaining floors will be occupied by corporate offices and suites. There is an outdoor swimming pool located on the 78th floor.

Four years ago, many of the black citizens in Cape Town were asked about a big white building that stands in the middle of the city. Many answered that it is a courthouse. The building in question is actually the one that houses the National Gallery of South Africa. This speaks tremendously about the past regime of Apartheid, and the effects still noticeable in the city. For many years, whites only were allowed in some of the top Cape Town hotels, restaurants, galleries and museums. Apartheid ended sixteen years ago, but they inequality of the time, and the evidence of the segregation still remains. In many countries, the world of art is sometimes, sadly the realm of the wealthy and the privileged. The Biennial Art Festival organizers are trying to change that.

In response to the economy, and some criticisms of past festivals becoming too commercialized, the festival this year focused on the local artists of Africa, as opposed to the previous years of bringing in famous artists from around the world in order to boost sales and commerce. This was an attempt to attract a new, fresh audience, and to involve the people of Cape Town who had been excluded in previous years. One event was the Young Curators Program, which put five black curators in charge of curating the shows. They were moved to Cape Town for the year and studied under the tutelage of a curator from Cape Town. Educational systems for blacks in South Africa is still lacking, and many of the curators and gallery owners are still mainly white South Africans.

This not only provided these five with the opportunity to fulfill their dreams, but guaranteed the focus of the festival, that of the art of the locals, living and working and celebrating in Cape Town today. The projects are located all around the city, and are more participatory and performance oriented than ever before. Actors and dancers perform throughout various venues. One theater staged a show in which the stage was filled with kids in Obama and Mandela masks. And murals are on the walls of the city’s buildings commemorating the heroes of the country. This is a wonderful time to visit Cape Town and to witness the art of the country.

Just when you thought the steroid scandals of major league baseball was over it comes out the LA Dodger Manny Ramirez tested positive for a chemical that helps get rid of the side effects of taking steroids. He has been on two other teams, making the biggest impact as a member of the Boston Red Sox, and starting out his career with the Cleveland Indians. He did not do any public speaking on the matter.

Now his legacy will forever be in question and he may not ever be voted into the hall of fame. Baseball used to be America’s pastime and these players are now breaking records of legends that never had the option to enhance their performance.

What are young kids supposed to think now? That no amount of leadership skills and good intensions and good old fashioned practice will make them major league baseball stars. And does that mean that players who are deserving of major league contracts are stuck in the minors because they refuse to cheat?

Major League Baseball has to do a major overhaul if they want to regain the fans that they have inevitably lost. Major League Baseball players all need to attend some kind of leadership development seminars. It works for other corporations so why not sports?

Major League Baseball is on its way to becoming a major joke. The executives need to take action and do something big. Players cannot just get off without any consequences if they are caught using steroids. What happened to the role models and their leadership skills?

Here is hoping that the future is brighter for Major League Baseball, despite the outrageous ticket prices, it’s about time the game could become what it used to be. Baseball is just the type of thing that the country needs right now to lift its spirits. If the banks and Manny can’t do anything without cheating, where really does that leave all of us?
