The Universality of Political Corruption

Sep-29-2009 By Christine

Political corruption  has been around ever since the advent of politics, same can be said for Electoral corruption. Note that Electoral corruption is a subset of political corruption and therefore is a narrower version of political corruption and is still as old as elections itself.  Political corruption, coincides with electoral corruption and is a prominent feature concerning politics and elections involving old and new democracies. An interesting example of this is in the Southern States of the U.S., like Mississippi is infamous for election fraud aimed at disenfranchising African American voters. Another example is the Daley machine in Chicago or the Huey Long machine in Louisiana.

These machines were found to be rigged and had ties to the Mafia. A final example is the Watergate scandal heightened sensitivity to political corruption and led to the implementation of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in 1974. This commission oversees election administration and all campaign financing.  The impact of severe political corruption and election fraud in a brand new democracy, like our own can be more pernicious and devastating.

It is clear that political corruption, the abuse of state resources and especially election fraud for partisan electoral purposes have extremely deep cultural and structural origins. They are intimately related to our Constitution, to the extent that they impose checks and balances, to the operational separation of state from government from the ruling party, to the degree of security of tenure enjoyed by the public servants, to the control of the economy and media and to the extent of the size and autonomy of the non-state and private sector.

They beg the question of whether or not there is genuine constitutionalism. Therefore, rather than resorting to exhortations and hand-slapping of the abusers, the problem must instead be addressed through institutional measures, like correcting structural flaws in the Constitution and laws of the country. Reduce Presidential and public official discretionary powers, shore up the independence of oversight and accountability bodies, bolster not only the independence, but the capacity of the Auditor General Department , and enact civic and public education that targets and raises the public, media and civil societies awareness and sensitivity to the problem.

Anti-Money Laundering (ATB), has established the ‘Know Your Customer‘ policy as an essential process in stopping unintentional involvement with illegal activities. These procedures are in order to assist ATB with assessing money-laundering risks that are associated with each potential new client and already established clients.

All ATB associates are required to ascertain and take, within reason, measures in finding out the identities of these potential new clients and already established clients. If ATB is satisfied with the verification of a client’s identity, then and only then can an account be opened. Plus, there are new procedures that were developed by the ATB that will ascertain whether a client is operating on behalf of a third party for both new accounts and existing accounts. Also, all transactions of countries identified by the United Nations Resolutions and the Canadian government and their individuals or entities, are not recognized by the ATB.

ATB’s policies ensures that only ATB accepts clients whose activities can reasonably be established to be legitimate. They require all ATB associates be trained to recognize and respond to any suspicious and potential money-laundering activities. Depending on the position held by an ATB associate, the training may be basic or extensive. Reporting such transactions in compliance with the applicable regulations and ensures the ATB retains appropriate records of client information through due diligence measures and are retained for 5 years.

Any company with international dealings or financial institution must implement ATB’s polices. ATB will make sure the following measures have been established:   A Chief of Compliance Office needs to be appointed to provide independent oversight of compliance by ATB and its subsidiaries. An officer needs to be designated to be responsible for corporate wide measures with which to combat terrorist financing and money laundering and will report directly to senior management.

Memories of a Tourist in Majorca

Sep-25-2009 By Christine

Majorca has been an attractive location for travelers for some time now.  Drawn by its amazing climate, the laid-back island lifestyle, and the lures of the water, it’s been a popular spot for the rich and famous for more than a century.  In recent years, the exciting night life in Majorca has gotten even more exciting, and has been drawing an impressive array of celebrities, looking for fun in a setting that’s sort of like paradise.  Planning a vacation here has never been easier, because the logistical details are always accompanied by pleasant daydreams about the place.  And for those looking for some exquisite island living from the luxury of a 5 star hotel, Majorca has something wonderful to offer.

Many wonderful somethings, actually.  There are many choices for hotels in this category.  We’ve chosen some of the cream of the crop, to offer you a beautiful selection that won’t disappoint.  You’ll have deliciously restful nights so that you can enjoy all the Majorca holds in store for you.  There is an absolutely stunning night life here, with clubs and discos to keep you dancing well past midnight, and often until dawn.  For those travelers who prefer pleasures that are not entirely nocturnal, there are plenty of diversions for the daylight hours.  Majorca has some excellent galleries showing local and international art, and you might be able to catch work by a Swiss artist who exhibits here regularly, Arti Leimbacher.

He’s part of a network of artists who are making some very exciting connections between Majorca and the art community at large.  His exhibition, Memories d’un turista, was one of the most exciting events in the cultural community here.  Drawing on some of the basic tenets of surrealism, and depicting an interior world looking at Majorca from an outsider’s perspective, his sculptural works are terribly haunting, drawing on the themes of memory and gastronomy.  There are more exhibitions based on the connections between artists at large and artists in Majorca in the works, and the art world will certainly be watching with interest.

Our complex has been having issues of responsiveness and professionalism with out current property management company. Recently being voted in as president of our home owners association, HOA this is the primary issue we are facing. Just like every one else I have a very very full schedule and a very limited amount of time for keeping up with this, but I suppose someone has to do it and that would be me now. At least it is a small community and we don’t have much property and few amenities to keep track of and to up keep on. The biggest thing that needs to be done is a change in property management company like I stated above. Not sure where to begin in finding companies willing to manage a small complex such as this. I thought I would begin with doing some research on the Internet for property management companies.

Transglobe property management came up along with several other companies. I began looking into these companies, reviewing any information I could find on their web sits and in the listings with the Better Business Bureau for Transglobe property management. There is a lot to be considered besides the monthly cost of the service provided by the property management company. What would the fees include would we be considered important enough since we are such a small complex, especially since many of these companies state they service properties large and small. Well yes, however would we be over shadowed by a larger property paying a large monthly fee? Well the starting point is reviewing and narrowing down from all available, using process of elimination those without any local representatives and some didn’t like to answer their phones. After these were eliminated we set up appointments to meet face to face and get a feeling for the companies ability to service our needs.

Preparing a backyard for a hot tub installation is oftentimes one step in the overall planning of home landscape design. While it may often be the central piece or thematic focal point in the design, which is also helpful, it is frequently one of several elements that contribute to a great atmosphere and entertainment set up of the back yard. Additional features that are often included include decks, patios, gazebos, barbeques, fire pits and fireplaces and various games. Choosehottubsdirect.com can point the way to the perfect hot tub that fits in and compliments the rest of the back yard elements.

Fire pits and fireplaces provide amazing ambiance elements to any environment, and on a cold winter night it can be extremely romantic to sit in a hot tub with a fire burning near by. The internal lighting system featured in many personal spas is a great addition to this effect. Another popular element is to install a flat screen television and dvd system for the ultimate spa experience. Many of the models also feature stereo systems, which is the only thing many people wish to add to their spa experience.

Gazebos are a beautiful element in any backyard. And they can contribute to an all day barbecue and spa event on any weekend. It is popular to enjoy great food from the grill during the day and retire into the warmth and pulsing streams of the hot tub that evening. Groups of friends will frequently alternate backyard locations to spend weekend evenings, and with all of the entertainment options available, it is possible to have a diverse and unique set up with each home. One house may be the movie oriented hot tub experience setting, while another may be the party central with music playing and deck dancing as part of the agenda. Sports like horseshoe, croquette and ping pong may be popular at another house.

Hawaiian obesity changing face of luau

Sep-17-2009 By Christine

A luau is a great way to start off any Hawaii vacation package.  It is a feast used to offer tribute to those who have accomplished something or to memorialize a big occasion.  For ancient Hawaiians, this meant usually religious events for honoring gods, and it could go on for days and days.  However, many things have been cut or changed since those times.  Before, women and men were never allowed to feast together, nor could women consume pork or bananas, and other foods.  Since 1819, this has been changed to the more inclusive feast that it is known for today.

A big part of the luau is the oven, which is actually just a hole dug in the earth in which hot stones are placed as the cooking element.  It is otherwise known as an imu.  Many feasts center around puaa—an entire pig—and also provide poi, which is starchy dish made from the taro plant.  Some people actually use it for a substitute for milk and other dairy products because of its creamy consistency.  Babies with milk allergies benefit greatly from the plant.  It is more than just a traditional dish though, it is also a symbol of old Hawaiian culture, of the past chiefs and tribal ancestors—haloa. So taboo is poi, that no one is allowed to fight or be rude in any way if a dish of poi is set in the eating area.  Only good word exchanges and smiles are allowed.

This tradition that the luau holds in Hawaii does not extend to everyday eating habits, however.  Unfortunately, many Hawaiians suffer from obesity now.  Traditional ways of eating and dishes have gone by the wayside.  In the past fifteen years or so, obesity rates have dramatically shot from bout thirty seven percent to fifty percent.  Despite these figures, the luau represents a time that once consisted of healthy feasting even if it has dishes which are not necessarily so healthy now.

Meat Storage

Sep-16-2009 By Christine

The outdoor kitchen is both a new world technological development and an old world return to some of the most basic and primal elements of cooking.   Preparing food in the outdoors is one of life’s sweet pleasures, and our outdoor kitchens are designed to help you connect with nature, but with the precision of contemporary science.  As you start to build your kitchen, you might decide to add another feature, to keep it evolving.  Outdoor refrigerators just might be exactly what you’re looking for.  They add another level of perfection to the whole experience, allowing you more time to focus on the perfect meal.

We all obsess over the perfect meal, and some people get philosophical about it, claiming that it doesn’t exist, because it’s something we’re just always searching for.  That might be true.  Like in any search, we pick up new things, and learn new tricks as we go.  Outdoor refrigerators have been an enormous help.  Adding the outdoor refrigerator is something that will help you in cooking and clean up.  For storage of meat and vegetables, time really is of the essence.  On those hot days when you’re only going to cook half of the steaks you bought yesterday, you’ll want to get them back where the elements won’t get to them, so they’ll be ready for your next meal.

It’s part of the lifelong search of having everything where you want it to be.  This, too, like the perfect meal, might be endless, but it’s fun.  With food storage, though, you’re saving food as well as saving money, and making sure that the meats will be well-preserved.  With outdoor refrigerators, like with our grills, the temperature is very precise, to insure that you’re in line with the science of food preservation and preparation.  All that’s left is the art, which is entirely up to you, as you go on your search for the perfect meal.

Singapore International Poker Tournament

Sep-14-2009 By Christine

Casino gambling and poker playing have become extremely popular throughout the world, and top players play in international tournaments every year. They have also become international celebrities and the game itself has risen in recent decades from the seedy underground of private clubs and games, to a respected and coveted tournament title orientation. As a thriving metropolis, Singapore has casinos and resorts that are extremely popular with residents and many tourists will visit one or more of them once or twice during their visit. Some of the top Singapore spa resorts also have casinos, or are located close to them.

In recent years Singapore burst into the scene of international poker tournaments by hosting their first. Major stars in the game show up for these from international pools of professional players, as well as major film stars and CEO’s who simply enjoy the game and through trial and tribulations have become quite good at it. Jennifer Tilly is just one of the Hollywood stars who has made a name for herself in the poker world. She also happens to be dating Phil Laak, who is one of the games best players. The two make for a dynamic table when they are found playing together. Gabe Kaplan is another famous actor who has become extremely well known and respected at the poker tables.

Jennifer Harmon, Howard Lederer, Phil Gordon, Patrik Antonius and Gus Edwards are all formidable names in game and are internationally known and feared at the table. They can be found at some of the top tournaments and casino tables along with hundreds and thousands of other eager players coming to the game with various skill levels and years of experience. Texas Hold em is probably the most popular current poker game, while other standards like five and seven card stud remain popular and consistently played. While many players, including the pros have a game that they feel they specialize in, or are particularly good at, most professional players are skilled at multiple games and can smoothly navigate the casino tables.

Relaxing in Udaipur

Sep-10-2009 By Christine

I arrived in Udaipur after a very long day of driving. After I got settled at my hotel in Udaipur, I had dinner at the hotels restaurant and drank quite a few Kingfishers. I was fortunate enough to be staying at the Udaipur the same time Yamaha motorbike company was and they were launching a new motorbike. They had a stage set up on the grounds of the grounds next to my hotel and I got to see a few Indian celebrities that did special appearances through out the launch. I don’t really know all the Bollywood celebrities, but that didn’t stop me for hanging around. I was the only white person in crowd. I thought that was pretty unusual, but it didn’t bother me in the slightest. I saw some flashy singing and dancing and I laughed at the stand up comedian who spoke entirely in Hindi, but everyone was laughing so much, I couldn’t help but laugh right along with them. I hung around and got to see some very nice motorbikes and the models standing in front of the bike were the best part of the launch. Exquisitely beautiful. India really does have the most beautiful women in the world.

The next day I spent my time in the City Palace complex. I recognized one of the building being used in the film Octopussy. I checked out the floating garden on Jagmandir Island, which gave me a great view of the City Palace itself. In the evening I went to a regular touristy type of place where I could listen to music and watch all kinds of dancing from the different regions within Rajassthan. All the the entertainment was okay, but I didn’t like being hassled for tips by all the performers, that didn’t make for a relaxing night. So, I headed back to my hotel room and called up room service to bring me up several bottles of Kingfisher. Now that’s worth tipping for and it’s very relaxing.

Herkimer Diamonds in New York

Sep-8-2009 By Christine

I came to New York to investigate for myself the Herkimer Diamond. The diamond is only found in a small area just outside of Little Falls, New York. I made a reservation with one of the four star New York Hotels and at the same time made an appointment with one of the owners of a Herkimer mine. I needed to physically see the land to understand the healing energies that I have come to experience when I work with the diamond in all the jewelry pieces I create.

I have noticed that the energy of the diamond helped me begin again. At the same time, it allowed me to recognize my inner space and helped me to remember that I am one with all, that I don’t need to ‘become’. I only need to allow for the process of actualization. I also noticed that the Herkimer Diamond helped me in clearing my body, mind and spirit of all my fears and repressed anxieties. It allowed me to relax and expand my life force. Also, the diamond made me somewhat more clairvoyant. I can now assist my clients not only with a handmade piece of jewelry specifically aimed to enhance what experiences they need in this life time, but I can now telepathically communicate with them, which I don’t do unless I have their permission. But, I’ve also found that the diamond is also good to disperse toxins that have accumulated in my body and then helps rebuild my cellular structure. It’s enhanced my metabolic rate and balanced my DNA/RNA structure.

So, coming here to Little Falls to see just where this miraculous crystal was found means a lot to me. As I visited with the owner of the mine, he told me that just recently the Herkimers have been found in Argentina. After my visit, I did some research and ordered some of the Herkimers from Argentina, but they definitely do not have the same qualities as the Herkimer’s found in Little Falls, NY.

Art and Music of Hong Kong

Sep-3-2009 By Christine

We have your Hong Kong hotel. We have carefully selected our hotels based on a consistently high level of service, design, and comfort. Combining the best of old world niceties, like hospitality, charm, and taste, with the best of contemporary technology and sensibility, your stay here will be a unique metropolitan experience that will provide a lovely introduction to Hong Kong. We recommend taking in a fantastic meal, served by top chefs who are schooled in the best methods for preparing international cuisine, enjoying a perfectly decadent bath, and then a fantastic night’s sleep in our gorgeous and sumptuous rooms, and then set out to explore the city.

Hong Kong is one of the most bustling and exciting metropolises in the world, and has a well-deserved reputation as a world-class center. There are tons of activities here for visitors of all ages, and plenty of offerings to choose from any day of the week. There are excellent museums and galleries, fantastic theaters and opera houses with some of the most interesting live art in Asia, and an increasingly steady supply of alternative spaces presenting edgy and experimental work for local and international audiences. There is certainly an eclectic mix of offerings as well as artists. Bahouki is one excellent example of this.

There may be very few Celtic bands as exciting as Bahouki. The three-piece ensemble from Scotland and Ireland play a broad range of traditional folk from the Celtic regions, and have an unusual energy and enthusiasm which is both gratifying and infectious. It is even more exciting that they are based in Hong Kong, offering another cultural influence into the musical landscape. They play in Hong Kong as well as on mainland China, with occasional gigs to Thailand and Malaysia. Bahouki presents old sounds with a new edge, adding a good dose of humor into the mix. This is an excellent way to spend an evening in Hong Kong, enjoying the local culture with an infusion of Celtic sounds, with fiddles and flutes and all the rest to make for hours of great fun and entertainment.

Johannesburg Romantic Walks

Sep-2-2009 By Christine

I wanted to make most of the sunny spring days in Johannesburg and explore the green parks that still encompass the city. Johannesburg is blessed with a number of large green patches intersected by meandering streams. I managed to narrow my choices down to just two, since I’ve only booked 3 days at one of the Johannesburg boutique hotels.

I checked out Little Falls Ridge first. The park sits at the end of Malachite Street and it offers walks along a set of koppies where some gold was discovered. So, I also took a tour of the old working mines named the Confidence Reef. On the tour I learned the gold strike only lasted not even a year before drying up. My next park, the next day was The Wilds. It is one of the oldest parks in the city. It’s 40 acres filled with indigenous trees, shrubs and plants. I really liked the exquisitely laid stone pathways with which I could wander on, all up and down the koppies of Parktown ridge.

Some of the paths crisscrossed the east and west side and the former slightly wilder than the latter with some of the lushest green lawns and unique ponds. I heard that I didn’t need to worry about walking the park alone, because there are patrolling guards and a secure parking lot. But, since I was alone, I didn’t mind asking one of the patrolling guards if he’d like to accompany me while I strolled along and admired the view of Hillbrow to the south and Sandton City to the north. He didn’t mind at all, and he even asked me out to dinner which I gladly accepted, since I had one more night left in Joburg. It’s amazing what one will find in a park.

Stamps and geography

Sep-2-2009 By Christine

I inherited the duplicates of an old stamp collection when I was 6 years old. The images on the stamps fascinated me. All the different colors and pictures of plants, animals, people, landscapes, seascapes, air craft, rockets, flowers, nuts, seeds, events and on and on and on. A a child you would have thought I would have been drawn to colorful multi colored stamps. But I was not, I really like the detail in the usually monochromatic engraved stamps. Some of the engraved stamps were in two colors the order in one color and the vignette in another color. I love the detail and little line that went into making up the image, I love looking at these under a magnifying glass. The stamps I got were from all over the world some of the stamps were 100 years old. The old paper intrigued me it was different then the paper of the newer stamps. The memories came back one day in Barcelona, I stepped from my Barcelona boutique hotel and saw a Spanish street scene that reminded me of an image I had seen on a stamp as a child. I learned a lot about the world from those stamps. Some had markings and symbols unrecognizable to me so I looked them up in a little book I had that would decode the symbols and identify the stamps country of origin. With that information I could locate the stamps rightful place in the album. With the identification of the country of origin I then looked on a map, if I was unfamiliar, to locate where on earth the country was located. Many stamps commemorated events in history I would be intrigued to find out more about these events learning history in bits an pieces.  I spent many long hours at this pursuit.

Sneezing in Granada

Sep-1-2009 By Christine

Lilian wanted to go to Granada Spain because she was sure she  was a gypsy in a past life. Granada is known for its gypsies, gypsy folklore and all things gypsy. I was not sure we could see gypsies in the luxury hotels Granada rightly boasts about, but never mind, what do I know. What I do know is Granada is the hairless dog capital of Europe, or it least it looked that way to me, as we had never seen so many Chinese Cresteds anywhere in our lives. We have two at home, a fierce and loving seven pound female and a grumpy twenty pound male who will do anything for bread. I did not know about any kind of Gypsy museum so I did not know where we would encounter any, but instead went for the city’s rich examples of wonderful architecture in the cathedral of Granada. It has all kind of styles going on here, Baroque, a little Gothic. We hoped to see regular dogs on our walk abouts to this cathedral and other places because the sight of little Chinese Cresteds made us miss our dogs. Turns out Gypsies were cave dwellers, building hill side homes called zambras, even into huge communities. You can go to these zambras and see flamenco dancing, a bug tourist draw. We hoped tomorrow to see a big Flamenco performance and we planned on coming back early, since the posters we saw around town promised an extravagant display. We took a stroll through Albaicín, an old ethnic quarter of the city. Walking through I began sneezing at the delightful spice scented air as little shops were set up to sell spices like cinnamon, which causes me to sneeze, but we got away for a happy little lunch of ground lamb and potatoes and saffron, so yellow and heady I almost needed a nap after eating. We washed the lamb dish down with some wonderful red wine.
