Sneezing in Granada
Lilian wanted to go to Granada Spain because she was sure she was a gypsy in a past life. Granada is known for its gypsies, gypsy folklore and all things gypsy. I was not sure we could see gypsies in the luxury hotels Granada rightly boasts about, but never mind, what do I know. What I do know is Granada is the hairless dog capital of Europe, or it least it looked that way to me, as we had never seen so many Chinese Cresteds anywhere in our lives. We have two at home, a fierce and loving seven pound female and a grumpy twenty pound male who will do anything for bread. I did not know about any kind of Gypsy museum so I did not know where we would encounter any, but instead went for the city’s rich examples of wonderful architecture in the cathedral of Granada. It has all kind of styles going on here, Baroque, a little Gothic. We hoped to see regular dogs on our walk abouts to this cathedral and other places because the sight of little Chinese Cresteds made us miss our dogs. Turns out Gypsies were cave dwellers, building hill side homes called zambras, even into huge communities. You can go to these zambras and see flamenco dancing, a bug tourist draw. We hoped tomorrow to see a big Flamenco performance and we planned on coming back early, since the posters we saw around town promised an extravagant display. We took a stroll through Albaicín, an old ethnic quarter of the city. Walking through I began sneezing at the delightful spice scented air as little shops were set up to sell spices like cinnamon, which causes me to sneeze, but we got away for a happy little lunch of ground lamb and potatoes and saffron, so yellow and heady I almost needed a nap after eating. We washed the lamb dish down with some wonderful red wine.
