Breath and Biofeedback in Circadian Rhythms
It’s something that scientists have known about for years, and mystics may have known about for centuries, but it’s a phenomenon that’s still very difficult to understand. The body has its own internal clock, called circadian rhythms , that are remarkably precise in accordance with the 24 hour clock on which human culture runs. Although it’s still quite mysterious, and how the cells know time has various explanations, the most common relation seems to have to do with light.
Human beings, and other biological creatures, are designed to respond to the cycles of light and dark. This means that creatures who live where the sun and moon operate on the usual patterns of day and night tend to adjust their internal clocks to match the time of year. Those who live in extreme places, like the North Pole, have a harder time adjusting.
A biology that’s been put out of balance, by illness, injury, or stress, may have a harder time keeping equilibrium with their own rhythms. Work with the breath in eastern traditions, and biofeedback in the west, shows that humans can return their systems once again to a harmony with this inner clock. Even in cases of extreme imbalance, then, there is still hope, and the body shows a remarkable capacity to keep itself in tune with its own nature.
