Gifts for New Parents

Dec-16-2010 By Christine

It can be difficult for child free friends and family to know what to give new parents as gifts. Sure, there are baby registries to help with the shopping, but many people would prefer to find their own gift, seeing it as a badge of honor that they were able to pick something good out all by themselves.

In reality, most parents would prefer to get something from their registry. They invest a significant amount of time and thought in to picking out the furniture, clothing, and toys that they want for their new arrival. They may also have practical items on their list such as diapers, bottle warmers, and breast pumps.

For those who want to find their own gift, it is still a good idea to look thru the registry list in order to get a feel for the styles and colors that appeal to the parents. It would be bad form to buy a pink, feminine lamp when the parents had already picked out furnishings in primary colors from land of nod . Or they could simply buy a gift card at one of the stores listed.

Sometimes the best gift is actually for the parents, something that can help them relax from the stress of pregnancy and caring for an infant. Things that help them reconnect as a couple are also usually appreciated.

Planning for the Houston Summer

Dec-7-2010 By Christine

If it’s true that everything is bigger in Texas , then it’s no surprise that the heat of the summer months can be unbearable in Houston. Perhaps this is why so many people flock to the Gulf Coast beaches or choose the summer months to travel away from home. Those that are stuck in the city for the hottest months tend to rely on air conditioning and backyard swimming pools.

Home owners who have considered installing a pool as a way to battle the upcoming summer heat need to get on the ball. Most Houston pool builders are booked with projects months in advance — and winter and early spring are their busiest months. Everyone wants their pool ready to use before the temperature starts spiking those summer numbers.

A pool building project takes weeks of planning, as owners work with the builders to settle on location, size, materials, and special features. The actual installation of a pool can take additional weeks or even months, depending on the scope of the project as well as any building and construction permits needed as well as inspections by county or city officials of excavation, plumbing, and electrical wiring. With many builders able to only handle a few projects at a time, their schedules are quickly filled by home owners who plan ahead and commit to their own installation well before spring arrives.
