The key to career advancement used to be a college degree. When most people only had high school diplomas, if that, someone with a college degree had proven a higher commitment to education and learning and had acquired skills as well as knowledge that could be applied to management and other leadership positions. The only people who needed advanced degrees were those in specialized fields such as medicine and the law or those who wished to do research or teach at the university level. Of course, there were also those who simply loved knowledge for the sake of knowledge.

As more people have found their way to associates and bachelors degrees, that has changed. Graduate degrees became necessary to advance within more and more career fields, especially in areas such as education and psychology. It has now reached a point where a masters or doctorate is needed simply to understand the more specialized subfields in any given study.

When it comes to education, it is not enough to get a doctorate, one needs to get an online doctor of education in leadership, or in management or in some other subfield within education. Specialization is key to advancing in any career and it is the advanced degree holders that are able to unlock the higher positions and salaries.

Health Insurance is Vital for Visitors

Jan-16-2011 By Christine

Visiting the US? Make sure you look into getting a good visitor health insurance before you leave home. Many people consider health insurance to be a luxury, but the fact is that thousands of visitors are injured or become ill while visiting the United States and, without insurance, that can create a multitude of problems.

It is no secret that the American health care system is one of the most expensive in the world. The out of pocket costs for dealing with a broken bone or other injury can quickly become tens of thousands of dollars of debt. Few travelers have the funds necessary to cover such an expense. Insurance can cover much of those costs.

You may think that such insurance is fine for students or immigrants who will be in the States long-term, but you’re just coming to visit family for a few weeks or making an extended business trip where you’ll be sitting in conference rooms and living in a hotel. Don’t kid yourself. Accidents happen anywhere and anytime. Car accidents, slips in the shower, even catching a virus or bacterial infection can result in hospital time. Losing prescription meds or having a dental emergency can also happen anytime. Visitor insurance covers all these things and much more.

A good policy for visitor insurance may seem a bit costly, but all it takes is one accident or illness to make a traveler realize just how vital it is.

Websites Need to be Useable

If a website doesn’t work properly, it becomes a liability. A bad website will generate an impression of the company as incompetent and useless. A truly egregious site can quickly become infamous as people who aren’t even interested in the products may develop negative associations with the brand. Website Usability is truly the key to a successful site, which is why companies should do thorough testing ahead of time.

This testing begins as soon as the design is complete and all the pages are finished. The site needs to be inspected for errors. This begins with checking the content for typos and grammatical errors. It also tests the various elements of the site. Every page must load properly, with all graphics, scripts, and formatting working and each button, link, and navigation element doing its job. If anything is broken, it must be fixed immediately.

The next phase of testing focuses on how users interact with the site. This must be done out of house, as anyone in the company or on the design team will be too closely connected to the product and the site. Only potential customers will be able to give objective feedback as to how the site seems to them. The tests will also check how easy it is for customers to complete certain tasks, by timing how long it takes to fill out an order or register for membership, etc.

While the first phase of testing assures a company that the site works properly, the usability tests in the final phase will inform them as to whether the site works for the needs of visitors. Both are equally important in creating a solid, working site.
