The key to career advancement used to be a college degree. When most people only had high school diplomas, if that, someone with a college degree had proven a higher commitment to education and learning and had acquired skills as well as knowledge that could be applied to management and other leadership positions. The only people who needed advanced degrees were those in specialized fields such as medicine and the law or those who wished to do research or teach at the university level. Of course, there were also those who simply loved knowledge for the sake of knowledge.

As more people have found their way to associates and bachelors degrees, that has changed. Graduate degrees became necessary to advance within more and more career fields, especially in areas such as education and psychology. It has now reached a point where a masters or doctorate is needed simply to understand the more specialized subfields in any given study.

When it comes to education, it is not enough to get a doctorate, one needs to get an online doctor of education in leadership, or in management or in some other subfield within education. Specialization is key to advancing in any career and it is the advanced degree holders that are able to unlock the higher positions and salaries.
