Taking the Family to Disney World

Feb-11-2011 By Christine

Sooner or later most parents will give in to the pressure and take their children to Disney World or Disneyland. The pressure may come from the kids who have been raised on Disney movies, toys, and marketing. It may come from the parents themselves, who dream of sharing the Magic Kingdom with their little ones. Pressure or not, taking the family to a Disney park is a major endeavor — unless they happen to live in Southern California or Orlando, Florida .

A visit to Disney is usually a dream come true for the kids. This means that parents need to start early on managing expectations, especially with smaller children. They may not realize that any theme park means standing in long lines, walking for miles, and dealing with crowds. They need to understand that they may not see Mickey Mouse himself, but they will see plenty of Disney characters. Parents need to instill a general understanding of money as well. Otherwise kids will expect to buy every souvenir they see and eat at every food stand.

Another important thing to teach kids is respect for park rules. A significant number of Disney World accidents are caused by guests who ignore safety instructions — which means parents need to follow the rules too. Kids should practice general safety habits like not running away from the family, not talking to strangers, and being careful of their immediate environment to prevent tripping or falling.

A few simple precautions will ensure that everyone has a safe and exciting visit to the world of Disney that they will remember for years to come.
